Ms SpEducate NYC: Take The “I” Out Of Special Education

I teach the 1% of 1% of students who have multiple disabilities, which means my students usually have complex healthcare needs, sensory losses, cognitive impairments, use wheelchairs and are non-verbal communicators. I love it. I don’t always love the system in which I teach. After several years of teaching, mostly in New York City, rather than run away feeling helpless, I decided that it was time to delve further into the education conversation. I know there are others out there just like me; who believe in our students who may need extra help, but don’t need to be excluded for it. I hope there are other teacher voices that see how the policies that we adopt now will have a life long impact on people with and without disabilities in our country. #NYCSped
